5 Ways To Make a Small Room Look Bigger

Living in a smaller space can be tough, especially if you possess a lot of items. There are ways, though, however, to make a smaller space look bigger. Take a look at my 5 top tips here:

1) Keep It Clean

This rule is the top-dollar golden ticket for keeping your home looking bigger than it is. Do your shoes end up all over the room? Get a shoe rack or organizer. Still waiting to unpack from your Christmas trip even though it’s February? Absolutely no judgment here, but your room will have a lot more space when your suitcase isn’t on the floor. Pick your stuff up, and give it all a good dust and vacuum. Bonus: once your space is cleaned up, spend ten minutes a day maintaining it so it will stay organized.

2) Declutter That Ish

Have a lot of knick-knacks on your dresser? Are bookshelves spilling over? Coffee table overwhelming? Spend a little time seriously considering how you can store some of your things out of sight. Less clutter on open surfaces will make the room feel less busy and give the appeal that there’s more space than there actually is. Bonus: the less clutter you have, the less stressed out you’ll feel.

3) Natural Light

There’s a reason apartment listings always boast about how the windows invite natural light in it makes space feel bigger. Even if you only have one window in the room, open the blinds, tie up the curtains and let some natural sunlight flow in. Even on cloudy and overcast days, it’ll open the room up and make it feel more spacious. Bonus: if it’s nice out, pop that window open and let a nice breeze in. If you live in a place that doesn’t get a lot of natural light, consider getting a sunlamp—turn it to face a wall so the light will bounce, mimic indirect sunlight.

4) Hang some higher shelves

This one can be a little more difficult, but if you have a lot of books or trinkets you don’t need easy access to, consider hanging a shelf or two up high. Putting a shelf about 12 to 18 inches below the ceiling will draw the eye upward and make the room feel much taller. Bonus: you’ll have more of your things out of your way.

5) Mirror Mirror

One or two strategically placed mirrors in a room will create the look of depth, as well as help bounce light. You could opt for small hanging ‘picture frame’ mirrors or a large, decorative full-length mirror. Either way, it’ll help open up your space and help your small room feel bigger—just remember to clean it once a week! Bonus: you’ll have a quick way to check your hair before you leave the house.
